Erythrocyte arginase, pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5N), and deoxypyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (dP5N) as indices of lead exposure.

The activities of three erythrocyte (rbc) enzymes, arginase, pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5N), and deoxypyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (dP5N), were compared in 16 lead workers and 14 age matched controls as correlates of blood lead (PbB) and unextracted zinc protoporphyrin (EP) concentrations. Subjects with PbB of 0.9-2.5 microM (19-52 micrograms/dl) had 6.5 +/- 0.6 IU of P5N activity with uridine ...

Interaction of hemoglobin E and pyrimidine 5' nucleotidase deficiency.

A Bangladeshi family is described in which the genes for both hemoglobin E (Hb E) and pyrimidine 5' nucleotidase deficiency are segregating. An individual homozygous for both these conditions has a severe hemolytic anemia, whereas family members who are homozygous for Hb E are asymptomatic and those homozygous for pyrimidine 5' nucleotidase deficiency have the mild hemolytic anemia that is char...

Characteristics of a pyrimidine-specific 5'-nucleotidase in human erythrocytes.

A 5'-nucleotidase with unique specificity has been identified in the soluble fraction of normal human erythrocytes. It mediates the hydrolytic dephosphorylation of pyrimidine 5'-ribosemonophosphates but is catalytically ineffective with purine nucleotides or with the 2'-, 3'-, or cyclic isomers of pyrimidine nucleotides. Activities at 37 degrees in dialyzed hemolysates of nromal human erythrocy...

Hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency: from genetics to clinical manifestations.

Hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5'N) deficiency is the most frequent abnormality of the red cell nucleotide metabolism causing hereditary non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia. The disorder is usually characterised by mild-to-moderate haemolytic anaemia associated with the accumulation of high concentrations of pyrimidine nucleotides within the erythrocyte. The precise mechanisms leading t...

A family with red cell pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency.

Congenital hemolytic anemia associated with pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency is reported in two siblings. Both have had moderate chronic hemolytic anemia, splenomegaly, and jaundice since early infancy. The peripheral blood smear is characterized by striking red cell basophilic stippling. As this feature has been found in all previously reported cases, it should be the clue to the diagnosis.
